It probably depends on the poacher. Some definitely practice “finning”, or catching a live shark, cutting off its fin, and throwing it, crippled, back into the water. However, shark meat is also eaten in some countries, and the cartilage is supposed by some to have health benefits as well, so some poachers (and legal hunters) may well use other parts of sharks they catch.
