Yes, poachers take hippos’ meat and tusks. Hippo meat is eaten as a delicacy in parts of central Africa. Hippo tusks also provide a convenient subsitute for elephant tusks because there is currently no worldwide ban on trading them. As of 2003, the hippo population has been reduced to 150,000 individuals due to poaching.
