do plants grow better with nutrients added and why?

    Yes, plants definitely grow better with nutrients.  Without the nutrients they have no way to grow really, or their growth will be very restricted.  They can only do so much with the energy that they make from photosynthesis using the sun.  A lack of nutrients will cause the plant to be sickly and die, which is why it is so important for soil to be healthy when planting, make sure the plant gets water, and allow the plant with ample sunlight so that it gather nutrients and grow.
