When someone owns a lot of cats or dogs, they are often unable to get the animals spayed and neutered. When the animals are able to breed out of control, and if any escape, they can upset the surrounding ecology. Technically, dogs and cats are not native in many places, so too many of them left to go feral can act as invasive species. An overpopulation of dogs or cats also negatively affects the environment because of the energy and resources necessary to feed them and cover medical expenses (if the owner can even do this), and to take care of them once they’re removed from the inhospitable conditions.
