Do people that live in the desert use less energy because they don’t need to heat their homes in the winter?

Not necessarily. What those in the desert save on heating expenses the use on cooling expenses. Depending on a person’s lifestyle (and whether AC units are involved) cooling a house can use just as much energy as heating a house.

Plenty of deserts are cold in winter, including the Gobi, and obviously the desert which is Antarctica.
