The cost of natural gas is pretty much flat or even dropping nowadays (2010). Retrofittng a coal heater to take natural gas and connecting to pipelines might be the bigger obstacle, depending on if an area (statewide, neighborhood, whatever) could at reasonable cost be added to the natural gas network.
