In California, registration fees for recreational or personal vehicles is far less than for commercial boats. Personal boats above 8ft, whether motorized or not, pay a fee of $29-$49. Commercial boats, usually for fishing, pay $314.25 for resident registration and $943.50 for non-resident registration.
