Yes, there are those who believe that natural gas will play an important role in the future of energy. Natural gas is arguably cheaper and cleaner than burning coal and oil. There are an estimated 7 million Natural Gas Vehicles on the roads worldwide, but only about 130,000 of these are in the US – so NGV’s are not quite as popular in our country. Like other alternate forms of energy, it’s in tough competition with the oil industry.
“According to the authoritative Potential Gas Committee (administered by the Colorado School of Mines), the U.S. sits on top of massive reservoirs of natural gas—an estimated 2,000 trillion cubic feet—that contain more energy than all the oil in Saudi Arabia” (citation 1). It’s hard to imagine that natural gas will not become a big player in the future of energy.
