Do people get sick from the water at a beach?

    Yes. Symptoms caused by contaminated water include fever, headache, diarrhea and vomiting. There isn’t an exact number of illnesses caused by contaminated beach water due to lack of reporting. Each year, 7 million Americans are sickened by contaminated water-including drinking and recreational water. In 2008, there were 20,341 beach pollution closing and swimming advisory days at the ocean, bay and Great Lake beaches.

    Yes, people can get sick from sewage or partially treated sewage levels cause unhealthy amounts of bacteria, viruses and parasites into coastal water. The most common sickness is gastroenteritis, an inflammation of the stomach lining. More serious diseases such as cholera, dystentery, hepatitis and typhoid are also possible to get from very polluted water. In the US, beach water is monitored and posted for the public. Other beach hazards include trash and stormwater overflows.
