Do trees need to have leafs to be consuming carbon?

It depends on the tree. Coniferous trees don’t ever have leaves but they have needles instead. Leaves help absorb sunlight photons through the top of their leaves as well as Co2 through the bottom of the leaves to help in photosynthesis.
