Although there aren’t clear figures on what type of deer has a keener sense of smell, reports show that the noses of whitetail deer have over 297 million olfactory receptors. To put this in perspective, dogs have around 220 million, and humans top out around 5 million. Mule deer have been known to be able to smell water up to two feet underground. Some scientists have estimated that a mule deer’s sense of smell can be up to 1,000 times better than a human’s although there is no readily information available on which species can smell better
