Actually, only about 20% of lightning strikes result directly in death. However, virtually all strikes cause serious injury, and more people may die later from these injuries. The immediate causes of death from lightning include cardiac fibrillation (some form of heart attack), injury to the brain that prevents breathing, and multiple system failure (which will not happen right away). People who survive lightning strikes coften have heart and neurological problems, psychological issues including depression, post traumatic stress disorder and amnesia, unusual burns, blunt trauma including bone fractures, and problems with vision and hearing.
