More and more schools are providing children with fresh fruits and vegetables, such as apple slices and carrot sticks, as part of school lunches. This is due from lots of pressure from parents and sometimes from local government. People are much more aware of the problem obesity is becoming in the US, and are also recognizing that healthy eating habits need to be formed early in life. However, progress in school lunches has been very slow and lots of children are still only getting preserved fruit in syrup if they are getting any sort of fruit at all.
