Most large industrial farms that grown corn or soybeans do tend to over fertilize. As Michael Pollan explains in his book The Omnivore’s Dilemma, it is cheaper for most farmers to buy a bunch of fertilizer and over fertilize because it ensures all their crops get the nutrients they need, and the excess just gets washed away. The farmer doesn’t have to pay anything for the free cleaning, but the chemicals are swept downstream. The reason they do is because its just easier and cheaper.
