Do most countries overfish?

Most countries that once had a notable coastal fish population have overfished their fisheries; however, not every country in the world falls into this category. A few of the most outstanding examples of overfishing leading to fisheries collapse include:

    • the cod fisheries off the coast of Newfoundland (fished by both European and North American countries)
    • the North Sea of Europe (fished by about a dozen European nations)
    • the anchovy fisheries in the coastal waters of Peru
    • the East China Sea fishery
