Many appliances contain mercury with varying degrees of spillage risk in the event of a break or malfunction. Fan Limit Control switches contain mercury in small tubes. Barometers and antique items such as crystal clocks, mirrors and organs contain mercury that risks spillage if broken. Electric appliances such as washing machines contain mercury tilt-switches that can leak mercury when disposed of in landfills or shredded for recycling.
