Do more people get sick from swimming in the ocean at the beaches in California or on the East Coast?

Comparatively, more people report illnesses contracted from prolonged contact with the Pacific Ocean, which points to more people getting sick from West Coast beaches.

However, more than twice as many people regularly swim in California beaches than swim in the colder, rockier oceans off of the East Coast, so these numbers are skewed. Roughly as many people report illnesses contracted from oceanic swimming in Southern California as do in Miami, revealing that people are equally at risk swimming in the Pacific and the Atlantic.

All this being said, the highest levels of illnesses reported from exposure to American beaches come not from the West Coast or the East Coast but from the lakeside beaches around Chicago (Lake Michigan!).
