Do a lot of fires usually occur when there is an earthquake in a major city?

    Yes.  Fires are one four major dangers that accompany earthquakes along with the effects of the ground shaking, ground displacement and flooding.  Fires are often started by earthquakes causing gas and power lines to break, and they can also break the water lines that feed the fire hydrants needed to put the fires out.  In 1906, the Great San Francisco Earthquake left the city burning for three days and destroying 80% of it.
