Do lost golf balls cause a lot of environmental damage?

Not really. Because golf balls don’t look like anything found in nature, most animals leave them alone. At best, an animal who eats eggs might try to crack a golf ball open, but would immediately realize that what they have found isn’t an egg. In addition, there are companies who specialize in tracking down and reclaiming lost gold balls to sell to golfers.
