The new lithium-ion battery developed at MIT – the brainchild of grad student Byoungwoo Kang and Professor Gerbrand Cedar – is able to charge in under 20 seconds, using a special surface material that enables faster movement of ions. This breakthrough could lead to electric cars and cell phones with astronomically reduced charging times.
The new lithium battery technology is not a normal charging time. On average, a lithium ion battery charges within three hours. Increasing charge current does not cut down the amount of time it takes to charge.
