Light waves bend around obstacles so they do not travel in a straight line.
Light waves do indeed travel in straight lines, but it is affected by matter. When light encounters matter, it may either refract or reflect (both of which change its direction of propagation), or be absorbed or transmitted (with no change). Strong gravity fields also appear to affect light by bending it like a lens around objects such as stars.
