Do lawn fertilizers hurt squirrels, birds, and other suburban animals?

Most commercial fertilizer companies claim that non-herbicidal and non-pesticidal fertilizers do not harm birds, pets, or other animals. However, according to the Emergency Animal Center, fertilizers (including fertilizer pellets) can cause sickness and skin irritation to certain species of birds, including pet parrots.

As for herbicidal and pesticidal fertilizers, fertilizer companies admit that these chemicals can be harmful to animals and should not be used in areas where wildlife might be at risk.
