Do lava lamps hurt the environment?

The answer to this question is a bit tricky because whether or not a lava lamp hurts the environment depends upon the substances used in the lava lamp.  There are many recipes for making homemade lava lamps and those which involve the use the solvent carbon tetrachloride are very environmentally unfriendly.  An alternative to carbon tetrachloride is the use of tetra chloroethylene.  Tetra chloroethylene is carcinogenic to humans and is a common soil contaminant, however it is slightly more environmentally friendly because the contamination can be remedied via chemical treatment or the process of bioremediation.  While there is a remedy for the alternative chemical it is still harmful to our environment.
