Do landfills ever leak hazardous chemicals?

Yes, some landfills unfortunately leak hazardous wastes. This is especially true for older landfills that were simply dug as a hole in the ground. Some modern landfills have a lining of rubber, plastic, or cement that can slow or even stop the leak of chemicals. It is bad if hazardous chemicals leak from the landfill because they get into the soil where plants and animals live (and may feed on the chemicals) and chemicals leak into the groundwater, which we use for drinking.
