Do Japanese homes still use straw mats? Is this more eco-friendly than carpet or hardwood flooring?

Yes, these woven straw mats, called tatami, are still used as flooring in modern Japanese homes. Most homes have at least one tatami room. The tatami is probably more eco-friendly than hardwood floors since they are made of simpler materials like straw or compressed wood chip boards, as opposed to timber in hardwood floors. The production of hardwood floors also require more complicated processes, which take up more power and resources.
