The EPA is a federal agency. It was established by the US government in 1970.

The EPA is federally fundeded—yay for federal tax dollars! Many states also have state-wide agencies that deal with environmental issues. For example, Massachusetts has its Department of Environmental Protection.
The names of the departments vary from state to state.
