The U.S. government is supposed to hold all imported food products to the same standards as those produced domestically. However, in 2008 the USDA published a report examining various failures in the FDA’s inspection of imported foods. Imported vegetables were one of the highest areas of concern. In 2009 the Department of Homeland Security took control of the issue by creating a center that focuses on the inspection of imported foods to ensure that they meet the same standards that we apply to domestically-produced food.
