Compost piles require water, but it is very important to remember not to drench them. If the pile is too wet it will turn into a smelly mess, but if it is too dry the composting process will take too long. Peter Compost, AKA Dr. Compost, recommends placing a layer of grass, straw, and leaves first, a small layer of soil to follow, added some water on top, and finally food scraps(be sure to follow this each time you add more to your pile).
