Do I need to keep a compost pile wet to make it work?

Your compost pile should be moist, not very wet.  It needs water to let the bacteria thrive but not too much that it becomes soggy and cannot decompose properly. When you put in green material such as grass clippings or leaves, you don’t need to put in as much water but if you’re adding dry material such as straw, recommends you soak it in water before adding it to your compost pile. A moisture meter can let you know if your compost pile needs more water or not.
