Yes. Hippo running speeds have been estimated from 18-30mph, while their swimming speed is only about 5mph.
The hippopotamus has been clocked running at speeds up to 18 miles per hour over short distances. Adult hippos cannot swim, they aren’t even buoyant, so they propel themselves by pushing off the bottom at about 5 miles per hour. They spend most of their time in the water and are extremely territorial; so even though they don’t move as quickly in the water as on land, it is advisable to keep one’s distance.
Hippos do not actually swim. Thanks to a unique system of gravity the hippo is able to sink to the bottom of the water and walk or run along the bottom. Hippos travel around 5 mph in water. Hippos typically travel faster in water then on land.
