Do herbicides have to be approved by the EPA before they can be used?

Yes. Herbicides are a subcategory of pesticides, and all pesticides sold or used must be registered by the EPA.  Moreover, registered pesticides may only be used for EPA approved purposes and at approved doses.  While these standards are set up to protect both human health and the environment, many claim that the EPA’s standards are not high enough and that their testing methods are not rigorous enough,as they do not adequately account for long term effects of pesticide use.
