Do trees grow their bark back?

No, which is why you should never peel off the bark of a living tree. The bark acts like skin does for humans; it protects the tree. Removing bark leaves the tree vulnerable to insects and disease. While certain trees do shed bark, they usually have another inner layer growing to protect it.
