Smog is a combination of a lot of pollutants.  If ozone is present in smog than the growth of plants and forests can be inhibited.  Ozone reacts with many plant compounds and creates problems for the plants such as a lower rates of photosynthesis.  This inturn leads to slower plant growth and lower yields.
