Do green ranking lists do anything helpful for the environment?

They seem to, especially when done by a major organization like Newsweek. The companies that do the most for the environment get positive publicity, and if they play it right it can translate into more money for their environmentally responsible products. Also, companies that don’t make the list and may lose customers have a solid incentive to go green.
