From 1961 to 2008, the federal government spent approximately $172 billion on the research and development of alternative energy projects.  This sounds like quite a bit, but when you consider the fact that the military defense budget for 2013 alone is close to 1 trillion dollars, it’s pretty easy to see that green energy initiatives are not a federal priority.
