Do the great lakes behave like the ocean because they are so large?

The Great Lakes of North America are sometimes referred to as the Third Coast-Line because of their strange behaviors. Because of their size, these lakes are able to generate waves much in the same way that the oceans can. Like the Caspian Sea, the Great Lakes are sometimes called freshwater seas. This is because their ecosystems behave much in the same way as ecosystems found in coastal seas, bays and oceans. They have similar food webs, predators and population dynamics and their beaches and islands bear striking resemblance to an open ocean.
