Do government agencies do surveys on public land to find new species?

Usually scientists working at research institutions are given funding to do research in unknown areas. One particular research subject could be the discovery and identification of new species, of which they have all yet to be found. Governments also do employ people to conduct surveys on public lands to discover new species also.
