Do golf balls that find their way into ponds create any negative effects for the animals living there?

Golf balls in the ponds on golf courses are retrieved by ball retrieval companies. It is estimated to be a 200 million dollar a year industry. I do not think they have a significant environmental impact during the time they are stuck in ponds, especially in comparison to the negative environmental impacts caused by the fertalizer and pesticide run off from maintaining golf courses pristine green fields.
