Yes, the American goldfinch, also known as the wild canary, does change color every winter. However, it is only the males that change color and only for mating season. During the summer the male American goldfinch wears a bright vibrant yellow plumage with jet black on the face and wings. When autumn comes around these colorful birds molt into a more bland coat. They are still yellow, but a much milder shade of yellow and the pitch black spots turn into a drab gray hue. Actually, in winter the males looks almost exactly like the females.
