Do glass bottles get broken into a million small pieces when they get recycled?

Yes, recycling glass bottles requires that they be crushed and broken down into what is called cullet (crushed glass). Green glass is separated from brown glass and clear glass and everything is washed before this process, since you cannot make new bottles from the different kinds. The cullet is melted down in a furnace and then molded into a new shape. The recycling process doesn’t degrade glass either, so this can be done over and over!
