Obviously they use electricity. Whether or not it is a waste would depend on whether or not you want the results they provide.
The basic Glade plug-in uses 2.1 watts of energy and the Glade plug-in with the night light uses 3.5 watts. The plug-ins were also found to contain moderate amounts of Phthalates by the National Resources Defense Council. Phthalates are known to interfere with hormone production and cause birth defects and reproductive harm.
