Do glaciers store dangerous chemicals?

  1. 0 Votes

Swiss scientists studying the country’s retreating glaciers have discovered that these glaciers are releasing hazardous, man-made chemicals. Persistent organic pollutants (or POPs) are found in all kinds of products, including pesticides. The general term encompasses chemicals like DDT which have been banned, as well as others still in use today–anything which takes a long time to break down in the environment. Many of the chemicals are stable and can therefore travel long distances in melt water. POPs have been discovered even in glaciers far from human settlement, in the Alps, Arctic Circle, and Antarctica.
