It will probably be a long time before we’re able to directly question fish about their tastes in music, and without the available of such a first-hand account, it might be out of place to say that fish like or dislike music. However, some studies have been conducted on carp to determine whether and how they respond to certain types of music. Interesting, the results consistently show that fish do respond to music. In one such study it was found that fish exposed to classical music seem to benefit physically, although no neurological effects were noted. what is slightly more interesting in these studies is that fish respond positively to music, but that they seem to be able to distinguish between different musical styles (such as blues vs. classical). In that case, we might eventually have to start asking not only whether or not fish like music, but what kind of music they prefer.
