Do farmers add chemicals to the soil before they plant seeds?

Yes. Many large farms spread chemical fertilizer down on their fields before they plant their seeds. Most of these fertilizers contain vital nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. They can also include many other elements like boron, chlorine, iron, copper and mercury. Overtime, these fertilizers can have adverse effects, the most prominent being run-off, which carries these elements into rivers, streams and lakes and finally the ocean where it can cause destruction to ecosystems.
