Yes. An electronic billboard can use up to 30 times the amount of energy that the average American home uses in a year. One solution to this problem is to make them solar powered, but since they run during the day and at night, they would most likely still have to run off the grid when there is no sun available to power them.
With the advent of LED lighting, billboard have started to use up less electricity as well. a 14×48 billboard now uses 61% less electricity than those in 2007 although the number of billboards themselves has increased steadily in the past few years.
A study published in 2010 found that a single LED-based outdoor billboard can consume more energy than a typical US home.
