Do diesel engines have more emissions than gas engines?

On a per-gallon basis, yes, says the EPA. It puts CO2 emissions per gallon of gas at 19.4 pounds/gallon and 22.2 pounds/gallon for diesel. However, modern diesel engines may be able to achieve significant mileage increases over gas engines. Volkswagen says its diesel cars can reach 60mpg and BMW is said to have a car that can reach 100mpg.

Also, diesel engines can be easily converted to use biodiesel, or even used fry oil from restaurants. Previously, diesel engines were supposed to have lower emissions than gas engines, but were notorious for their black smoke clouds.
