I think desalination plants help the environment more than harm it. Opponents believe that adding too much salt into the oceans, after desalinating water for industrial use, is harmful to ocean wildlife and the overall water quality. After conducting some research, I found that the ocean, even with higher levels of salt additions, still remains at particular salinity average. That said, desalination plants that use renewable energy sources do not contribute to greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. There are such a variety of methods to generate electricity to drive these plants, including solar, wind, and water power. These plants help remote areas get needed water for personal use as well as for irrigation and other industrial purposes to grow crops and maintain their own food supply.
