Yes. During winter pine cones supply deer with a source of food.
Wildlife biologists that have studied deer have discovered that they have a preference for certain foods, and will not eat others foods until their preferred food is no longer available. Deer primarily eat vegetation, leafs, and grasses during the summer, but during the winter when food is scarce they have been known to eat pinecones, but it is not their preferred food source.
