They do. Apparently the energy consumption of data centers doubled between 2000 and 2005. In 2005 data centers used the equivalent energy of 14 power plants.
Oh yes they do! Recently, data centers have been trying to go green by cutting down energy consumption, but they still use up a lot of power. “An ongoing survey from the Uptime Institute found that, from 2005 to 2008, the electricity usage of its members’ data centers grew at an average of about 11 percent a year.” Though they’ve been trying to reduce their consumption of energy, apparently the issue is only getting worse and not better.
Yes, and according to Greenpeace, Apple is the dirtiest in terms of data storage. Facebook holds its data in a coal-powered facility and is fast becoming one of the dirtiest data-storers.
