Yes, all shells degrade over time. Sometimes they naturally degrade if left in a calm environment, and other times they are battered against rocks and the shore and are part of what makes up sand at the beaches. This is why when you go to the beach there are all sorts of shells, but a lot of times it is difficult to find one that is perfectly intact.
